The Fourth of July can be a great time to make memories with family and friends. Gathering to celebrate a wonderful day in the history of our country, we are sure many of you are thinking about participating in putting on a little fireworks show. Before you and your family and friends decide to do this, make sure everyone knows about fireworks safety. Although ALL fireworks are banned within the Brownsville city limits, we compiled a list of safety tips to keep in mind for those who are planning to take their fireworks elsewhere.
- Make sure they are legal – By law, fireworks cannot be set off within city limits at anytime. Fireworks stands can only be operated outside of the city limits so do not purchase from anyone selling inside the city. Federally legal fireworks will have a label with the manufacturer’s name on it as well as directions on how each firework works. Illegal fireworks are usually left unlabeled. As fun as it may be, do not attempt to make your own fireworks. This is a very dangerous thing to do and is not legal in any way, shape or form!
- Child Safety – Bottom line, children should never play with fireworks. Anytime your child wants to handle a firework or play near them, make sure there is adult supervision. Some children are scared of the loud noises that some fireworks can make so always have a pair of earplugs ready. Many kids want to gather the leftover pieces from the aftermath of the fireworks but don’t let them do that until a while after the fireworks have been set off because parts could still be hot.
- General Precautions – Accidents can happen, so it is better to be prepared than not! Always have a bucket of water nearby when setting off fireworks. Never point fireworks at any buildings or trees, make sure they are pointed away from any of these things when setting them off. Lighting them in clear, open spaces such as empty parking lots is good. If you have pets, make sure they are kept inside while the fireworks are going off so you can keep them safe, too!
Everyone at Valley Day and Night Clinic wants to wish you a safe and happy summer, and always make sure to be safe when setting off any sort of fireworks!
